Privacy Policy — ChessKata

ChessKata is made by Lewis Logic LLC (Colorado, USA).
The short version
ChessKata collects nothing. No names, no email addresses, no photos, no location, no contacts, no advertising identifiers, no usage analytics — nothing at all. There is no account to create, no server of ours to talk to, and no advertising anywhere in the app, free or paid.
Your games, your notes, your flashcards and your review history live in the app's own storage on your device and nowhere else.
What the app stores on your device
Everything you put into ChessKata stays on the device you put it into:
Chess games you import, stored as the original PGN text, unmodified.
Flashcards you write — the position, your note, the key move, any arrows or highlights you drew.
Annotations you add to a game: move comments, symbols, drawings, alternate lines.
Tags, decks and profiles you create.
Your review history, which is what the spaced-repetition schedule is calculated from.
Your settings, including engine limits and display preferences.
A single flag recording whether the one-time Pro unlock has been purchased.
Deleting the app deletes all of it. We keep no copy and there is no backup on our side, so there is nothing for us to restore — use the export options in the app for anything you would be sorry to lose.
Profiles
ChessKata supports more than one local profile, so a coach can keep a separate library per student and a household can share a tablet. A profile is a name you type and a colour the app assigns. There is no photo, no date of birth, no email address and no password. Profiles exist only on the device and are never transmitted anywhere.
When the app uses the internet
ChessKata works entirely offline apart from three things you start yourself:
Importing from Chess.com. When you tap import, the app requests your public game archive from Chess.com's public API. This needs no password and returns only games that are already public on your profile. Chess.com receives the username you entered and your device's IP address, as any web request does. Their privacy policy governs what they do with it.
Importing from Lichess. The same arrangement with Lichess's public game export API: no login, no token, no password. Lichess receives the username you entered and your device's IP address, and their privacy policy governs it.
Purchasing or restoring Pro. Handled entirely by the App Store or Google Play. See below.
Nothing else in the app makes a network request. The chess engine is bundled into the app and runs on your device, so analysis, game review, flashcard review, annotation and export all work with no connection at all.
Purchases
ChessKata is free to download, with one optional one-time purchase that removes the free-plan limits. It is not a subscription.
The purchase is processed entirely by the App Store or Google Play. We never see or store your payment details, and unlike some of our other apps ChessKata uses no third-party purchase-validation service — there is no RevenueCat, no analytics SDK and no anonymous identifier of any kind. The app stores one boolean on your device recording that you own the unlock, and asks the store directly when you tap Restore.
Promotional codes are redeemed through Apple's or Google's own redemption screen. We never see the code.
Advertising and analytics
There are none, on either plan. No banner ads, no interstitials, no rewarded video, no behavioural advertising, no contextual advertising, no cross-app tracking, and no third-party advertising or analytics software of any kind. This is not a free-tier limitation that paying removes — the app has never contained any of it.
Children's privacy
ChessKata does not knowingly collect personal information from children, because it does not collect personal information from anyone. There is no sign-up, no profile that leaves the device, and no advertising.
The app is intended for a general audience of chess players, and is marketed to adults, parents and coaches rather than to children directly.
Third parties
The app contains no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking software.
The only external services involved are the two you invoke by name — the public Chess.com and Lichess game APIs — and the app store you downloaded the app from, whose transactions are between you and Apple or Google.
Your rights
Requests to access, correct, export or delete personal information — including under GDPR, the CCPA or any similar law — are always answered the same way: we hold none to act on. Nothing you do in ChessKata reaches us.
If you want your data off your device, deleting the app removes all of it. If you want a copy first, the app exports your games and annotations as PGN.
Changes
If a future version of ChessKata ever collects anything, this policy will say so, with a revised effective date, before that version ships. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
